Sophie Le Bourva has been practicing printmaking for 25 years. She is also an engineer. With the methodical obsession of a lab technician she forges/ bites her plates using etching- soft ground, litho crayon and aquatint, etched lino and gritty, painterly collograph techniques. By day, calculating the structural forms and behaviour of steel and by night scavenging the streets for manhole cover rubbings, collecting leaves and photographing grotesque corbels from Gothic churches. Her sources start with photographs, a sketchbook diary and a vast collection of natural materials and objects.This seemingly unlikely alchemy between the urban environment and passion for natural forms, materials, characterises her process and work.
